Abstract

Recently there has been much interest in the energy transfer between a surface and an atom or a molecule approaching a surface. It has been shown that inelastic scattering of rare-gas atoms can give information about the elementary excitations of the surface [15.1]. The energy transfer processes also determine the probability that the incoming particle loses its kinetic energy and is adsorbed at the surface, the so-called sticking probability. Since adsorption is the first step in heterogeneous catalysis and since it represents a simple example of a surface reaction, the dynamics of adsorption are of considerable interest.
