Zusammenfassung

1856 berichtete A. von Graefe über eine langsam progrediente Lähmung und atrophie der äußeren Augenmuskeln mit Ptosis und zunehmender Einschränkung der Augenmotilität. Als Ursache vermutete er eine Kerndegeneration der Augenmuskelnerven. 1879 beschrieb Hutchinson das gleiche Bild als Ophthalmoplegia externa. Fuchs (1890) und Silex (1897) demonstrierten je einen Fall mit Beschränkung der pathologischen Veränderung auf die Augenmuskulatur und bezeichneten das Bild bereits als „Ptosis myopathica“. 1888 teilte Oppenheim das Krankheitsbild eines 20 jährigen Mannes mit bioptisch verifizierter proximaler Muskeldystrophie der Glieder mit, welcher zugleich Lähmungen der äußeren Augenmuskeln, der Zunge, des Gaumensegels, der Kehlkopfmuskeln und des M. deltoideus hatte, die Oppenheim bereits als oculäre und pharyngeale Form der Muskeldystrophie deutete. Gowers beschrieb im gleichen Jahr einen Fall, bei dem der initialen Augenmuskellähmung Muskelschwund der Gesichts-, Hals-und oberen Extremitätenmuskulatur folgte. Andererseits haben Landouzy u. Déjérine (1886) und später noch zahlreiche Autoren einzelne Myopathien beschrieben, welche zuerst den Schultergürtel und im späteren Verlauf auch die äußeren Augenmuskeln in geringem oder stärkerem Maße befielen, wobei man auch eine Verkennung der damals noch unbekannten dystrophischen Myotonie in Betracht ziehen muß. 1892 beschrieb Dutil das typische Syndrom der oculären Muskeldystrophie (oc. MD) bei 7 Mitgliedern einer französischen Familie. Eine weitere Mitteilung über 8 Mitglieder einer Sippe in Frankreich folgte 1903 durch Delord.
