Zusammenfassung
Als periphere Sehbahn im weiteren Sinne ist das gesamte Neuronensystem der Retina mit seinen bis zu subkortikalen Kernen reichenden Fortsätzen zu verstehen. Im engeren Sinne betrachtet man als periphere Sehbahn die Neuriten der Ganglienzellschicht der Retina bis zu ihrer Endigung im Corpus geniculatum laterale, einer Schaltstation auf dem Weg zur primären Sehrinde in der Area striata. Neben dieser Hauptbahn sind auch Nebenbahnen mit Endigungen im Nucleus praegeniculatus, im Pulvinar des Thalamus, im Hypothalamus und im Mittelhirn beschrieben worden. Sie dienen aber nicht der optischen Wahrnehmung, sind quantitativ beim Menschen unbedeutend und teilweise ungenügend gesichert. Des weiteren sollen in der peripheren Sehbahn auch zentrifugale Fasern zur Retina verlaufen (Honrubia u. Elliott, Pfister u. Wolter, Sacks u. Lindenberg, Wolter u. Liss).
