Zusammenfassung

Ein Römer der Antike wurde durchschnittlich 22 Jahre alt. Heutzutage liegt die Lebenserwartung im modernen Europa oder Amerika bei 74 Jahren (Abb. 1). Wenn man die durchschnittliche Lebensspanne als Maß des physiologischen Alterungsvorganges nimmt, dann hat man seit der Antike einen gewaltigen Fortschritt erreicht. Jedoch ist es letzten Endes nicht gerechtfertigt, Altern in dieser Weise zu messen. Der Unterschied der Kurven A und B reflektiert verbesserte öffentliche Gesundheitsfürsorge, gesündere Ernährung und Beherrschung infektiöser und anderer Erkrankungen; dessenungeachtet haben diese Verbesserungen nicht den normalen Alterungsvorgang beeinflussen können. Und wir sind dessen ziemlich sicher, denn das erreichte Alter der am längsten Lebenden damals und heute hat sich nicht auffallend verändert. Römische Senatoren lebten genausolange, wie die unserer Tage — und waren genau so einflußreich. Die erreichten Jahre der Ältesten in einer großen Bevölkerung ist das brauchbarste Einzelmaß des Alterungsprozesses, weil es von exogenen Einflüssen relativ unabhängig ist. Bessere Krankheits- und Gesundheitsfürsorge hatten lediglich zur Folge, daß sich — graphisch ausgedrückt — Kurve A der mehr rechteckförmigen Kurve B näherte.
