Nachdem die Funktion des Thymus und der bursa Fabricii einmal erkannt war, bürgerte sich die Vorstellung von zwei Hauptkomponenten innerhalb des lymphatischen Systems mit unterschiedlichen immunologischen Funktionen, nämlich cellulärer und humoraler Immunität, ein.
