Abstract

Pathologic studies have indicated that coronary arteries of 1.0 mm diameter are rarely affected by arteriosclerotic disease (1,5). This fact prompted us to evaluate the feasibility of performing bypass grafts to segments of the coronary arteries 1.0 mm in diameter. Extensive experimentation in the dog laboratory established that the end of the internal mammary artery could be sutured to the side of 1.0 mm segments of the coronary arteries with consistent success (4). In these animals, after the anterior descending coronary artery was ligated at its origin, flow through the mammary graft was usually in the range of 50 ml/min.
