Statistical Measures to Quantify the Benefit from Screening: a Case Study on Cholesterol Screening

Summary

A variety of cholesterol screening strategies aiming at the identification of persons at high risk of developing some cardiovascular disease have been proposed during the last decade. These proposals, which have been controversially discussed in the medical community, are analyzed in this paper using standard and non-standard methodological techniques of screening evaluation. The intention of the presentation is twofold: (1) to provide a brief comprehensive review of statistical measures employed in this context, (2) to evaluate the predictive properties of six important screening recommendations in the framework of a large cohort study. The results of the analysis add critical caveats to the discussion about what can be expected from cholesterol screening on the population level.
