Abstract
A decision theoretic framework is presented which allows for a characterization of optimal balance sheet gaps of banks facing interest rate risk. A risk minimizing position requires the gap to be positive, i.e. the bank performs positive maturity intermediation. In this view, using the size of the gap as a measure for the accepted interest rate risk is questionable. If the balance sheet gap and a Financial Futures position are optimized simultaneously, the gap increases which directly affects the bank’s profits. This “production effect” of Financial Futures is valid without any speculative motives of the bank’s risk management.
