Abstract

Due to the technical developments in molecular biology and molecular genetics there has been progress from being able to analyze genes with known gene defect (e.g., HPRT, PKU) to being able to analyze genes with unknown gene defect localizable using genetic or cytogenetic techniques (e.g., DMD, CF). The newest stage of this development, the human genome project, holds promise of being an efficient route by which to identify many or all of the genes of the human genome and is of special relevance in diseases with more complex genetics, including psychiatric disorders.

This work was supported by a grant from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and by the Human Frontier Science program.
