RELATAN — Computer-aided Analysis of Texts based on the Method RELATEX

Analyzing and Modeling Data and Knowledge

Abstract

RELATEX is a method for analyzing the informational content of a text. A piece of information is modeled as a relator-argument-structure based on the syntactic structure of a sentence, not on lexical meaning. RELATEX represents the information of a text as a network of relations. Knowledge of lexical meanings is not presupposed, rather it is “derivable” from the text structure. The distinction between contingent information and law-like knowledge is made in order to extract text-specific and speaker-specific meaning from the text. New terms can be analyzed and understood without contamination by the traditional meaning of the terms. This method is supported by the computer program RELATAN, which is based on the commercial databank program dBASE IV. The menu options are introduced. Applications of RELATEX/RELATAN including methodical translation are described. The interpretation of the network properties given by RELATAN are discussed (connectivity, thematic centers, differentiation and integration of concepts).
