Abstract
We give a simple derivation for the Jukes-Cantor transformation. The importance of the transformation with respect to distance-based tree constructing methods is demonstrated. We show that it is not justified to expect that the transformation improves the additivity of the estimated distance if non-additivity is measured by the degree of violation of the equation in the four-point condition. Finally, some effects of model violation are discussed.
