Abstract
The dynamical system which will be discussed in this chapter was introduced by Hopfield (1982), who relied also upon previous suggestions and results by other researchers (Hebb, 1949; Cooper, 1973; Kohonen, 1972; Little, 1974). As we shall see, the cognitive capabilities of this model are subject to severe limitations. Its clear and elegant mathematical formulation, however, renders it particularly useful for illustrating and examining in detail the main concepts introduced in the preceding chapters.
