Abstract
We demonstrate a new mechanism for optical bistability(OB) in integrated optics(IO): light-induced-desorption of molecules from the surface of the waveguide, or out of pores in the waveguiding film itself, and their re-adsorption from the gaseous phase, respectively. By this process the effective refractive index N of the waveguide depends on the guided power P’. This effect is the basis of intrinsic dispersive OB of the following IO devices: input grating couplers on planar waveguides, Fabry-Perot or ring resonators, and presumably Bragg reflectors and directional couplers.
