Abstract

During the years of massive industrial job losses, one branch of industry was characterised by very high growth rates. This explains the great interest of researchers and policy makers in the high-tech sector. High-technolgy is generally considered a shortcut to reindustrialisation. But does the high-tech sector live up to its promises? A lot of research has been done on the developments in the US. Focal points were areas like the Silicon Valley, the Greater Boston Area and the Research Triangle. However, after years of reports about astonishing growth rates of firms which had been founded by young, unconventional entrepreneurs, recent press releases have been less optimistic.
