Zusammenfassung
Es mag 100 Jahre nach Robert Koch vor allem für Laien ein wenig schwer verständlich sein, von einer neuen, bisher unbekannten ansteckenden Krankheit zu hören. Die Überzeugung ist weit verbreitet, daß die Mikrobenjäger so erfolgreich gepirscht haben, daß das jagdbare mikrobielle Wild bekannt ist. Dieses Bild entspricht jedoch nicht der Wirklichkeit. Im Jahre 1981 gab es ein Debüt auf der mikrobiellen Szene, das sehr schnell weltweite Aufmerksamkeit fand. In USA wurde damals eine anscheinend bis dahin unbekannte Krankheit beschrieben. Sie war allerdings den amerikanischen Ärzten schon etwas früher, etwa 1979 aufgefallen. Einige Jahre später wurde die Krankheit auch in vielen anderen Ländern, darunter auch in Europa festgestellt. Ob es sich bei der Erkrankung um einen ansteckenden Prozeß handelte, wußte zunächst natürlich niemand. Aber sehr bald durfte das vermutet werden.
