Abstract
The Network Troubleshooting Consultant (NTC) is a rule-based expert system that gives interpretive analysis of Ethernet/DECnet related problems. NTC effects an interactive diagnostic process by providing an interface to diagnostic procedures for in-line testing. of both the hardware and network software. We report on the organization of the rule base and a general rule writing facility for NTC-like systems. Validation of the system is based on empirical testing over a data base of problem cases. We discuss these technical aids as well as the project structure that facilitated an evolutionary style of development in a commercial environment. The system has been implemented in the EXPERT system for designing consultation models and, currently, is in a pilot test phase by users in selected manufacturing plants.
