Abstract
“Systems” which aid the development of other software systems have existed for several years. They have evolved and broadened in scope considerably. We can classify such systems as toolboxes or as development support systems. The former are loosely-connected systems composed of individual development aids e.g. editors, compilers, languages) which are relatively easy to use together. Development support systems, on the other hand, attempt to provide an integrated approach to the whole task of system development. They normally encourage a particular development methodology, the individual facilities of the system being designed for this purpose.
