Abstract
There have been many useful reviews published during the past few years concerning both the clinical and basic scientific aspects of research on the antineoplastic antibiotic, bleomycin. Umezawa, the discoverer of bleomycin (Umezawa et al., 1966) has written several reviews dealing primarily with the chemistry, structure, in vitro, and in vivo studies of bleomycin (Umezawa, 1975, 1976). Other articles dealing more specifically with the extracellular reaction between bleomycin and cellular macromolecules have appeared recently (Miyaki and Ono, 1976; Müller and Zahn, 1976a, 1977; Müller et al., 1976). Review articles have also been published concerning research on the effects of bleomycin on mammalian cell cultures and cell-cycle kinetics (Barranco and Humphrey, 1976; Terasima et al., 1976). An exhaustive review of the literature on both basic scientific studies and clinical studies has been prepared by Crooke and Bradner (1976). The reader is also referred to the Gann Monograph on Cancer Research (Carter et al., 1976) which is devoted to articles on both fundamental and clinical studies.
