Zusammenfassung

Als Keratinisation oder Verhornung wird die Transformation lebender Epithelzellen in totes Hornmaterial bezeichnet. In der Phylogenese tritt die Keratinisation bei Wirbeltieren mit dem Beginn des terrestrischen Lebens in Erscheinung und ermöglicht offenbar die Anpassung an die neuen Umweltbedingungen. Die Hornschicht, das Produkt der epidermalen Verhornung, wird zum Resorptionshindernis für Substanzen aus der Umwelt und zur Barriere gegen eine schrankenlose Abgabe von Körperwasser.
