Transport Across Sarcoplasmic Reticulum in Skeletal and Cardiac Muscle

  • Chapter
Transport Across Single Biological Membranes

Part of the book series: Membrane Transport in Biology ((MEMBRANE,volume 2))

Abstract

The sarcotubular system is a network of membranes present in striated muscle cells and is generally more prominent in skeletal than in cardiac muscle. This membrane network was first noted by Veratti (1902) in studies by light microscopy. More recently, detailed knowledge of its morphology has been obtained by means of electron microscopy (Porter and Palade, 1957; Huxley, 1957 and 1964; Anderson-Cedergren, 1958; Franzini-Armstrong, 1964; Peachy, 1965).
