Abstract

The tremendous accomplishments of scientists in delineating various metabolic pathways in cells and their current massive frontal attack on membrane structure and behavior have closely paralleled the emergence of data on the chemical and biochemical composition of cells and their membranous components. Obviously, without the availability of data on the chemical nature of cellular components, little progress could have been made in understanding the many physiological processes operative in these complex biological systems.
