Abstract

Antiarrhythmic drugs are frequently used in patients with depressed left ventricular function due to instrinsic cardiac disease. The most frequent cause of the reduction in myocardial function is acute myocardial infarction. Since drugs are utilized in the face of a depressed myocardium, studies of their action on cardiac function should be made under these circumstances. However, evaluation of the hemodynamic action of the antiarrhythmic agent is almost always performed in animal models with normal cardiac function. This has led to the conclusion that antiarrhythmic agents produce few or no hemodynamic consequences.
