Abstract
Recognition of the necessity for examination of viable myocardial tissue specimens in investigation of the cardiomyopathies has resulted in recent years in the development of techniques for myocardial biopsy (1–4). Despite the present capability for performing myocardial biopsy at low risk, there are few reports describing light- and electron-microscopic examination of myocardial biopsy specimens in patients having this type of heart disease (5). This applies especially to idiopathic and alcoholic cardiomyopathy; moreover there is significant variance regarding the type, significance and estimated severity of ultra-structural lesions of the myocardium in these conditions as reported by different groups of investigators (6–9).
