Abstract
There exist many situations in scientific and business investigations in which the technique which has come to be called cluster analysis is applicable. In order to avoid specialization to perhaps a few fields of application we will discuss the technique from a general and perhaps somewhat abstract approach in this chapter and give what we consider interesting applications in a later chapter.
