Abstract
In 1925 Andre Gratia published his observations and studies on an antibacterial substance which we know as a colicin. He showed that one strain of Escherichia coli (called V because it was a virulent strain) produced a substance which was bactericidal for E. coli ø (also known as strain CA81). Gratia’s strain V was later renamed CA7 but the original name survives in colicin V, the name now given to the substance it produces.
