Abstract
Earlier experiments on in vitro culture of mammalian pituitary glands have shown that these gradually lose their ability to secrete tropins into the nutrient medium. This was first proved for ACTH and subsequently for TSH and the gonadotropins (Guillemin and Rosenberg, 1955). Hormonal elaboration in vitro could, however, be restored after 3–4 days by the addition of hypothalamic extracts (Guillemin, Hearn, Cheek and Housholder, 1957). These findings reconfirmed the stimulatory hypothalamic control of the anterior pituitary hormones. Most of the modern experiments were carried out in an artificial medium M-199 (Difco). The technique is not complicated (Figs. 47, 48).
