Abstract
Since the human fetus is inaccessible to the usual biochemical methods for assessing the infant or adult, evaluation of its well-being is difficult. Methods for fetal study are, therefore, for the most part, limited to biophysical techniques, except for the later stages of labor when the membranes have been ruptured and cervical dilatation is present.
This investigation was supported in part by Research Grants HD 01467-04, 5K03 HD 18295-07, and HE 09507-02 from the National Institutes of Health.
