Abstract

The discovery, several years ago, of Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus, a group of predatory bacteria which attack, penetrate and develop within other bacteria, came rather as a surprise. It seemed that the extensive search for different groups of bacteria in the more common ecosystems would have exhausted the chances for finding new groups of widespread organisms. However, such discoveries might have been anticipated, since even the most careful and tedious attempts for isolation of bacteria from nature result in the culture of no more than a small percent of the total population. This is because in nature most organisms depend on other organisms in the environment for nutrients or for the creation of proper chemical or physical conditions (Hanks, 1966).
