Abstract

Among the common rock-forming minerals, perhaps no major group is as poorly understood as the amphibole group. This is because doublechain silicates are very complicated with regard to crystal structure, chemical variation and natural occurrence. Consequently, although many amphibole species have been distinguished, mostly on a chemical basis, it is difficult to relate the geologic occurrences to physical and chemical principles.
