The Spectrum and Charge Composition of the Primary Cosmic Radiation

Part of the book series: Handbuch der Physik / Encyclopedia of Physics ((PHYSIK 9,volume 9 / 46 / 2))

Abstract

We shall try to present, in what follows, the current status (as of mid-1964) and some of the outstanding problems relating to the study of the primary cosmic radiation. This writing is made at a time when satellite and space probe observations are beginning to contribute greatly to this knowledge and at a crucial time near sunspot minimum when the primary spectrum, particularly at the low energy end, is undergoing extensive study. The term primary radiation will be used to denote that corpuscular radiation which arrives from outside of the solar system (also called galactic radiation). Thus, we specifically exclude the very interesting field of solar cosmic rays as well as the exciting new fields of γ-ray and neutrino astronomy. We shall be mainly interested in the following features of the data relating to the primary radiation:

  1. 1.

    The charge and isotopic composition;

  2. 2.

    The energy or rigidity spectra of the various components.
