Abstract

Up to this date the theory of selfadjoint and also of maximal normal operators uses Stieltjes integrals as essential tool, thus following D. Hilbert’s approach to infinite matrices (51). These integrals were afterwards applied to transformations (operations) by F. Riesz (49), J. V. Neumann (50) and H. M. Stone (26). We shall develop a different scheme which, however, must be confronted with the classical one, so we shall need Stieltjes integrals too. Some remarks on these integrals and on Radon’s integrals are in order, since there is some misunderstanding in the literature in this respect.
