Special Problems of Neurolept-Anaesthesia

  • Chapter

Abstract

Before commenting on some of the problems encountered in the development of this new technique of balanced anaesthesia, I would like to suggest that the commonly used term neuroleptanalgesia is a misnomer. When in addition to droperidol and fentanyl lactate nitrous oxide-oxygen is also administered the subjects not only became analgesic but they also loose consciousness or in other words become anaesthetized. Consequently the term neurolept-anaesthesia is preferable to that of neuroleptanalgesia for the characterization of the state of these subjects. The term neuroleptanalgesia should be restricted to the condition of subjects who do not receive nitrous oxide-oxygen and who although analgesic react to auditory stimuli.
