Zusammenfassung

Seit der Gründung des EAISR 1950 in Kampala schloß sich die britische anthropologische Forschung, die zuvor auf unkoordinierten Initiativen von Universitäten, kolonialen Forschungsorganisationen, Stiftungen, Instituten und privaten Forschern fußte, an dieses neue Institut an 2. Die Forschungstätigkeit des EAISR deckte sich bis vor einigen Jahren mit der Tätigkeit der britischen „Social Anthropology“ in Ostafrika schlechthin. Die nacheinander folgenden Direktoren des EAISR — W. H. Stanner, A. I. Richards, L. A. Fallers, A. W. Southall, D. J. Stenning — waren zum Teil namhafte Vertreter der britischen Social Anthropology 3. Die Forschungspolitik Großbritanniens ging immer mehr dahin, die wissenschaftlichen Zentren in die zu untersuchenden Gebiete zu verlegen. “The UK has financed African studies... in two ways — by making research grants to individuals trained in British Universities who apply direct to the Social Science Research Council, and by establishing centres of research in Africa itself. The second of these methods is the most significant, since it is hoped that these centres will continue their work in territories which become independent, with the support of their governments“ (L. P. Mair, 1960 a) 1.
