Abstract

When the executive committee of this First European Congress of Anesthesiology decided to schedule a panel discussion on hypnosis it must have been under the influence of forces operative nowhere else but in this city of Vienna. As far as I am aware, this topic has never before been on the agenda of a meeting of anesthetists. At the request of the executive committee, it became my task to invite participants and structure the debate of this panel. Under these circumstances, it seems appropriate that I should make an initial statement of intent.
