Abstract
In the course of the development of ultrasonics, the transmission of acoustic waves through matter has been studied in two broad categories. These can be distinguished as (i) when the waves provide information about material which they do not significantly alter, and (ii) when the waves produce changes in the matter traversed, which changes are themselves of primary interest.
