Abstract
The following presentation deals primarily with the general physics of the oceans. Tides and waves will be discussed in separate chapters of this volume, except that a brief treatment of internal waves is given here, because in the presence of internal waves caution has to be excercised when discussing other phenomena. The chemistry of the sea water is touched upon, because in some cases knowledge of the distribution of chemical constituents helps to throw light on the character of the circulation.
