Ampere, Davy et beaucoup de physiciens de la première moitié du dix-neuvième siècle pensaient généralement que le champ magnétique terrestre était dû à des courants, des courants continus, à peu près constants, circulant d’Est en Ouest dans l’intérieur du Globe. Cette vieille hypothèse d’Ampere n’a été jusqu’à présent ni confirmée ni démentie par l’expérience. Il est fort possible que, dans les régions très profondes de la Terre, hors d’atteinte d’une expérimentation directe, il circule des courants de ce genre. Mais en surface, ceux qui se manifestent et qu’on appelle courants telluriques n’ont pas du tout le caractère de courants continus, du moins si l’on fait abstraction de certains courants d’origine très locale qu’on se refuse à considérer comme étant des courants telluriques à proprement parler. Le courant tellurique est essentiellement un courant variable dont l’intensité, la direction, le sens même varient d’une façon très capricieuse en fonction du temps. Il est possible qu’il présente une composante continue, mais en tout cas très petite, dont la réalité même est considérée aujourd’hui comme douteuse.
