Forces in the Earth’s Crust

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Handbuch der Physik / Encyclopedia of Physics ((PHYSIK 10,volume 10 / 47))

Abstract

The Earth is a rotating celestial body. Its matter is subject to gravitation. If stresses other than hydrostatic pressure were altogether absent, its surface would be perfectly smooth and exhibit a simple geometrical form. However, everyone knows that the surface of the Earth is not perfectly smooth but exhibits a great number of disturbances. This fact must be the result of forces other than hydrostatic compression in the Earth’s crust and therefore requires a physical explanation.
