Metaphor-based User Interfaces for Hyperspaces

Abstract

This paper describes an approach to improve usability of hypermedia information systems by using concrete user interface metaphors. Metaphors are recommended to be used here in two ways: Firstly, to support authors who construct hypermedia applications, and secondly, to support the users who navigate within these hyperspaces. Various types of metaphors must be offered in order to support the goals of different users. An authoring tool can embody these metaphors thus making them available to the authors who can then perceive the system in much the same way as the users. This paper first discusses the motivation for using metaphors in the user interfaces to hyperspaces. A prototype of a metaphor—based authoring tool for multimedia environments — called ShareME (Shared Multimedia Environments) — is presented and its metaphors discussed.
