Abstract

The laser Doppler anemometer (LDA) was the first instrument used to measure the unsteady flow velocity and turbulence in the combustion chamber of a reciprocating engine under firing conditions. It has been used in quantitative measurements of gas flow velocity, which varies according to combustion chamber geometry and engine operating conditions. This has fostered the development of engines with low fuel consumption and less pollution.
