Secondary Plant Substances Special Topics of the Flavonoid Metabolism

Abstract

The principles of flavonoid biosynthesis were reviewed some years ago (Progr. Bot. 40, 126 ff.). Like other phenylpropanoid compounds, they are derived biosynthetically from phenylalanine, which is produced via the shikimate pathway and chanelled into phenylpropanoid metabolism by phenylalanine ammonia lyase (HANSON and HAVIR 1979, 1981, JONES 1984), one of the key enzymes of phenylpropanoid metabolism.
