Abstract

The current scene in plant taxonomy has been reviewed by Heywood (1984a): The last 15 years have seen such an enormous richness and diversity of activity that an equally large amount of digestion is needed, as well as a period of sober and mature reflection. The b space necessary for this should be provided by the fact that neither spectacular new concepts comparable to cladistics, or phenetics, have been introduced within the last few years, nor have new fields of evidence as extensive as phytochemistry or micro-morphology been disclosed. To the reviewer, the highly synthetic yet fine-grained approaches to plant-herbivore coevolution, to chemical evolution in general, or to problems of floristic diversity would seem to be supreme fulfilments of these postulates, as also the learned treatments of classificatory issues reviewed below. Apart from this, monographic studies would seem to be the most important contributions to our field, and unusual reports from the natural history of plants the most stimulating ones.
