Abstract

Due to the considerable progress in the field of molecular genetics, it is no longer possible to distinguish clearly between work on structure, mutation, recombination, and function of genetic material. The knowledge of the molecular structure of a gene and of its behavior in mutation and recombination events is the basis for an understanding of its function and a prerequisite for successful genetic engineering, i.e., artificial recombination.
