Abstract
Increasing interest is being diverted in many countries towards studying the deeper parts of the Earth’s crust. Several projects involving deep-earth surveys are either in progress or being planned. The motives for these projects may be briefly summarized as follows:
-
— the possibility of achieving an overall increase on geoscientific knowledge of the structure, material, and development of the Earth’s crust and mantle
-
— prospecting for valuable substances such as deep-lying oil, gas, minerals, geoenergy, etc.
