Observations in an Active Hydrothermal System Through Deep Drilling: Valles Caldera, New Mexico

Observation of the Continental Crust through Drilling I

Part of the book series: Exploration of the Deep Continental Crust ((EXPLORATION))

Abstract

Through a cooperative agreement between Union Oil Company (UOC), Public Service Company of New Mexico, and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), a large body of exploration data collected by UOC at the Baca project area in the Valles caldera between 1971 and early 1982 has been catalogued and open-filed. Using these data and cuttings from 19 deep UOC boreholes in the Redondo Creek portion of the caldera, we have completed several studies principally concerned with structural and stratigraphic permeability control in the high-temperature (up to 341°C) geothermal reservoir (Hulen and Nielson 1982, 1983; Nielson and Hulen 1983, 1984).
