Abstract

Colorectal carcinoma, which in 1982 accounted for 25,233 deaths in the Federal Republic of Germany, is one of the most common cancers in this country. If we consider the chances of a cure after treatment, this carcinoma may be regarded as the most important of all types of cancer. Although its aetiology is not clear, dietary habits would appear to be involved. Its natural history has long been the subject of controversial discussion. On the basis of numerous studies, it may be supposed that most colorectal carcinomas develop from a prior adenoma. Colorectal adenomas can present a variety of appearances, and their malignant potential varies. One of the factors that have a particularly marked influence on the malignancy risk is the size of the adenoma (Hermanek, 1983).
