Abstract
The wish to study conformations of saccharides came in 1973 when I heard a lecture by Otto Westphal on bacterial endotoxins. Since then one of my main goals has been to find the conformation of “the endotoxic principle”, Lipid A. This is a disaccharide227 consisting of two glucosamines, heavily substituted with long fatty acids, ester-bound and amide-bound. Therefore215 we began developing a potential energy function for saccharides, starting with glucose.
