Abstract

As organiser of one of the many groups that develop methods for conformational analysis by minimisation of conformational energy and related techniques, I have time and again had to answer the following statement. “It’s wonderful to have those magnificent programs; just give me energy parameters for my molecules.” It comes from the budding student we try to seduce into our group as well as from the experienced researcher looking for a framework on which to hang his spectroscopic or kinetic observations or for a rationale telling her which of several possible synthetic routes may be profitable.
