On the Nature of the ESD Active Species on Metal Surfaces

Part of the book series: Springer Series in Chemical Physics ((CHEMICAL,volume 24))

Abstract

This paper discusses the question whether the ESD active species on metal surfaces are physisorbed molecules, chemisorbed atoms or compounds. This problem is intimately connected with that of the ESD mechanism and that of the relation between ESD and surface structure. Much can be learned about it in particular by studying this relation and this will be emphasized here.
