Abstract
A method is presented for obtaining approximate solutions to large-scale integer goal programming (IGP) problems. This is an extension of a single objective heuristic, with which we have solved efficiently in the past integer linear programming problems with hundreds or even thousands of variables and constraints. Computational results indicated that the IGP heuristic locates quickly optimal or near optimal solutions. It enabled us to obtain quickly a solution to a relatively large IGP problem having 175 integer and 0-1 variables, and 81 individual goals grouped into 6 priorities. The result of a rather comprehensive model indicated the site, size and service areas for health care facilities in a region that represented considerable improvements over the current situation.
